6 Tips to Maintain Healthy Drains and Pipes

With all the hustle and bustle of everyday life, quite often the importance of our drainage and pipe systems are overlooked. Yet when disaster strikes, having a drainage or pipe issue can quickly become your worst nightmare. That’s why we believe prevention is always the best solution.

If you’re conscious about maintaining the health of your drainage and pipe system, this is the article for you.

Tip #1: Clean Your Drains Monthly

Pipes and drains back up when water and waste isn’t able to flow freely. Typically, this occurs because of a gunk build up in the pipes. We recommend cleaning your drains monthly, using an enzyme-based cleaner, not a chemical-based one which can damage your pipes.

A popular homemade solution is baking soda and vinegar, let it sit for 15 minutes in your drain before rinsing with boiled water.

Tip #2: Purchase a Drain Guard

Purchasing a drain guard will help reduce the amount of waste that is washed down the sink. Drain guards are typically a plastic or metal grate disk that sit on top of your plug. They are designed to collect debris which can then be thrown in the bin.

Tip #3: Flush Correctly

Hopefully we all know the rules of flushing, but sometimes it’s easy to become complacent or lazy. When maintaining healthy pipes and drains, it’s essential to only flush toilet paper and human waste.

No nappies, or ‘flushable wipes’ (which are never properly flushable), tampons or paper towels ect.

Tip #4: Avoid Grease at All costs

Never pour grease down any of your drains. All your pipes eventually connect under your home at a main drain. This means if you’re dumping grease it’s going to coat not just your kitchen pipe, but every pipe on its way to the main sewer.

Tip #5: Keep Your Eyes Peeled for Trouble

It’s always important to keep your eyes peeled for problems and be diligent. Are there any signs of leakage? Can you smell anything out of the ordinary? Lookout for wet patches or leaks, which are often a telling sign that something is wrong.
